INTRODUCTION
The history of our School
Welcome to Orford. The original building dates from 1872 when Orford School
was built and founded after the 1870 Education Act passed by Gladstone’s
government, which required the provision of school places for every child.
The school became a voluntary school; the money needed to build it was
raised by voluntary contributions, mainly from Sir Richard Wallace, who
owned the near by Sudbourne Park Estate, and the Rector, the Rev. John
Maynard. The school has maintained strong links with the church ever since.
It became an aided school in 1955 after a Trust Deed was established with
the diocese, with money donated by Miss Maynard, a descendant of the Rector
of 1872. Since the 1986 Education Act Orford has been a Voluntary Aided
School with the building owned by the Church authorities, and they still
have some responsibility for helping towards building and maintenance costs.
The school now consists of 4 classrooms, a library, a IT suite and offices,
a kitchen and a main hall used for assemblies, PE and dining room. The
School has extensive outdoor areas for sport, gardening, science & other
curriculum activities.

of the Castle. The school grounds are adjacent to the community recreation
ground and playground.

(to Melton and Orford) drive down the hill and straight over the traffic
lights at Melton and over the railway line. Turn left at next roundabout and
follow the B1084 all the way to Orford. The school is immediately after the
Fire Station on the right as you come into Orford. The drive from Woodbridge
takes about twenty minutes.

School Ethos and Values
At Orford School we aim to provide an environment where children can develop
into independent and confident individuals. They are encouraged to value
themselves and those around them so that they can acquire positive attitudes
to their work and their relationships. This is reinforced by a spiritual
dimension that is present in all areas of school life, particularly through
the care of the children and staff for each other and their environment.
The school plays an important part in the life of the village. A warm
welcome is extended to visitors at all times and there are excellent links
with the community at large through the Orford School League of Friends
(OSLoF). The church is used by the school for the main annual festivals of
Harvest, Christmas and Easter as well as a Leavers’ Service at the end of
Summer Term.
The Rector,
Rev David Murdoch
, takes assembly every
Thursday.
